AZUSA (CBSLA.com) — A vehicle may have sparked a brush fire Monday in the Angeles National Forest near the Morris Reservoir, above Azusa.
The fire was first reported at about 11 a.m. and quickly grew to 600 acres, according to the US Forest Service. The flames were apparently sparked by a car that went off the roadway.
Fire crews at the scene are reporting a fatality in that crash.
Evacuation orders were issued for Azusa’s Mountain Cove, Rainbow Canyon Ranch and El Encanto areas, along with all campgrounds and other areas between the fire and the Crystal Lake area within the forest. Azusa has established an evacuation center at Memorial Park, 320 N. Orange Ave.
A second fire erupted in neighboring Duarte just an hour and a half later and quickly burned through more than 500 acres. The Fish Fire, which started burning near Fish Canyon Road, is approximately four miles away from the fire near Morris Reservoir and is burning closer to homes, but flames appear to be burning up a hill and away from neighborhoods.
Highway 39 was closed to traffic at the bottom of the canyon, and Azusa police also closed Encanto Parkway along the city’s border with Duarte.
Evacuation orders in Duarte are in effect for residents north of Fish Canyon Road from Greenbank Avenue to Encanto Parkway. An evacuation center for residents displaced by the Fish Fire was established at Duarte City Hall, 1600 Huntington Drive.
